Happy Friday, Sippers,

⚡ TL;DR | Why AXA’s Repeat Cannes Win Proves Purpose Drives Real Effectiveness.

How was your week?

Most of mine was spent working from Toronto since the girls are at sleepaway camp.

I attended a fantastic Cannes Lions recap event this week, surrounded by fellow marketers as we dissected the world's most creative campaigns. Naturally, my mind drifted back to last year's festival and a post I shared right.

If you were sipping with me last summer, you might remember my post, Policy with Purpose, where we looked at how AXA France cracked the code on consumer consideration by connecting brand purpose directly to product innovation.

As I wrote last year:

"AXA France's award-winning 'Three Words' campaign, developed with Publicis Conseil, is a landmark initiative that redefines home insurance to explicitly include domestic violence as a covered risk... This powerfully connects Purpose to product by adding 'and domestic violence' to AXA's policies, offering emergency housing relocation and legal support to victims. Just as they would assist with fire or flood damage. This isn't just a policy update; it's a profound social statement."

What Are the "Three Words"?

Standard home insurance policies routinely cover water damage, theft, or fire. AXA literally amended their standard insurance contracts by inserting three simple French words: "et violences conjugales" (and domestic violence).

With just three words added to a contract, emergency housing relocation, legal assistance, and psychological support were legally locked into standard home insurance policies. It wasn't a separate charity or a short-term PR stunt, it was a simple product tweak with life-saving impact.

What Is Brand Purpose

And Why Does It Matter Even More in an AI World?

Lately, I've spent a lot of time brainstorming how AI can solve complex marketing challenges. But as generative AI lowers the barrier to producing endless content, ads, and personalized messaging, it raises a crucial question: When every brand can produce fast, optimized content, what actually makes a consumer care?

That's where Brand Purpose comes in.

  • What it is | The "why" behind your "what"; the core reason your brand exists beyond pure revenue, guiding your decisions and actions.

  • Why it matters in an AI world |AI can give you hyper-efficiency, scale, and speed, but it cannot manufacture soul, empathy, or trust. In a world flooded with automated messaging, consumers are casting votes with their wallets for brands that stand for something real.

In short, AI can optimize your reach, but Purpose is what makes you worth reaching out to.

The Stakes Haven't Changed

But the Proof Has

The human context behind AXA's initiative remains as urgent today as it was when the campaign debuted.

As I highlighted in last year's post, one in ten women is a victim of domestic violence in France, and the barriers to escaping are harrowing:

  • Fearing for safety | If they attempt to leave without support

  • Financial dependence | Leaving them without immediate resources for housing or basic necessities

  • Lack of emergency housing options | Making the prospect of escaping feel insurmountable

When AXA stepped in to treat domestic violence with the same contractual urgency as a house fire, they redefined what an insurance company's core promise —protection— actually means in the real world.

From Creative Spark to Creative Effectiveness

Fast forward to 2026, and AXA did it again.

After taking home top creative honours last year, AXA returned to the Cannes stage to win the coveted Creative Effectiveness Lions Grand Prix.

Winning for creativity in year one shows a brilliant idea. Winning for Creative Effectiveness a year later proves that the idea generated real, measurable business impact.

And the numbers speak for themselves: the campaign delivered a +9% uplift in new contracts. In an industry as competitive and low-engagement as insurance, that isn't just a win; it's a massive commercial triumph.

In my 2025 post, I laid out three core pillars of what a strong brand purpose delivers:

  1. Deep Connection & Loyalty | Fostering genuine relationships and cultivating long-term trust.

  2. Differentiation | Providing a distinct identity that sets you apart in a sea of functional commodities.

  3. Resilience & Growth | Enabling brands that genuinely care to navigate market shifts and drive sustained commercial performance.

AXA's 2026 Cannes win is living proof of those exact three pillars in action. Creative Effectiveness Lions aren't awarded for good intentions; they are awarded for hard business results, growth in brand consideration, customer acquisition, and long-term equity.

Think About It

  • Is your Purpose built to last? | Flashy PR campaigns get short-term buzz, but embedding Purpose directly into product terms creates sustainable value over time.

  • Are you joining an elite company? | Last year, I noted how AXA was entering the club of iconic purpose-led brands like Dove, Patagonia, and Nike. Their repeat win cements their place in that group by showing Purpose as a multi-year growth engine.

  • Are you solving real problems? | AXA realized that peace of mind isn't just financial coverage after a physical loss—it's safety when a person needs it most.

☕ The Sip Takeaway ☕

Brand purpose isn't a one-off campaign strategy; it's the rocket fuel for long-term effectiveness. AXA's back-to-back Cannes Lions victories remind us that when you use your core product to solve genuine human challenges, commercial success and consumer loyalty follow naturally.

What's your brand purpose?

See you next week
